The Federal guidelines on the identification, evaluation, and treatment of overweight and obesity in adults have defined 'overweight' as a body mass index value between 25 and 29.9; and 'obesity' as a body mass index value greater than or equal to 30. BMI is a ratio between weight and height. It is a mathematical formula that correlates with body fat, used to evaluate if a person is at an unhealthy weight (given a certain height). BMI value is more useful for predicting health risks than the weight alone (for adults ages 18 and up). Individuals with high BMI's are at increased risk of developing certain diseases, including: Hypertension, Cardiovascular Disease, Dyslipidemia, Adult-Onset Diabetes (Type II), Sleep Apnea, Osteoarthritis, Female Infertility, and other Conditions, including: idiopathic intracranial hypertension lower extremity venous stasis disease, gastroesophageal reflux and urinary stress incontinence. This new book gathers research from around the world in the critical field of obesity research and its effects.

This book explores the ways in which the body is sacred in Western medicine, as well as how this idea is played out in questions of life and death, of the autopsy and of the meanings attributed to illnesses and disease. Ritual and religious modifications to, and limitations on what may be done to the body raise cross cultural issues of great complexity philosophically and theologically, as well as sociologically - within medicine and for health care practitioners, but also, as a matter of primary concern for the patient. The book explores the ways in which medicine organises the moral and the immoral, the sacred and the profane; how it mediates cultural concepts of the sacred of the body, of blood and of life and death.

The power of the breath has been recognized for millennia as an integral part of health and well-being. In Awakening the Sacred Body, teacher Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche makes accessible the ancient art of Tibetan breath and movement practices. In clear, easy-to-understand language, he outlines the theory and processes of two powerful meditations-the Nine Breathings of Purification and the Tsa Lung movements-that can help you change your relationship to yourself, to others, and to the world. The simple methods presented in Awakening the Sacred Body and on the accompanying DVD focus on clearing and opening your energetic centers to allow the natural human qualities of love, compassion, joy, and equanimity to arise. When sadness releases, joy is able to arise. When anger releases, love becomes available. When prejudice releases, equanimity prevails. and when lack of kindness ceases, compassion is present. These practices, which focus the mind and breath together while performing specific body movements, will help you discover your inner wisdom and express your greatest potential.

Awakening Through the Nine Bodies pdf/epub/kindle/txt ebooks
By:Phillip Moffitt
Published on 2017-08-24 by North Atlantic Books

Download

Based on meditation practices Phillip Moffitt learned twenty years ago from Himalayan yoga master Sri Swami Balyogi Premvarni, this beautifully illustrated book is a guide to exploring the nature of mind and gaining a better understanding of experiences that arise during meditation. The Nine Bodies teachings map out a journey that starts with consciousness that arises in the physical body and is directly observable, and then travels through ever more subtle levels of consciousness to that which is not manifest and is only potential, and therefore has to be inferred. The book includes a series of mysterious illustrations that Balyogi created during his time of intense Samadhi explorations. Each illustration is a rich composition of symbols that express aspects of inner experiences that are almost impossible to express with language. Moffitt provides detailed interpretations of all the illustrations along with precise meditation instructions. Balyogi's revelations and visions about the structure of consciousness and how non-specific energetic potential manifests in both the mind and the body reveal that there are multiple, interactive olevelso or obodieso of being within each of us. Balyogi gradually realized that all our experience is composed of nine such bodies and that exploring these nine bodies yields insights into the nature of body and mind, which in turn brings happiness, joy, bliss, and the peacefulness and stillness of realizing emptiness. Moffitt makes these teachings available for meditation students from all spiritual traditions to use as gateways for exploring the nature of mind and as additional means for tracking and classifying meditative experiences. Students of yoga will also find value in the teachings of the Nine Bodies as they provide a means for contextualizing and connecting with yogic teachings on chakras, koshas, gunas, and the Three Bodies.

The Distressed Body pdf/epub/kindle/txt ebooks
By:Drew Leder
Published on 2016-10-17 by University of Chicago Press

Bodily pain and distress come in many forms. They can well up from within at times of serious illness, but the body can also be subjected to harsh treatment from outside. The medical system is often cold and depersonalized, and much worse are conditions experienced by prisoners in our age of mass incarceration, and by animals trapped in our factory farms. In this pioneering book, Drew Leder offers bold new ways to rethink how we create and treat distress, clearing the way for more humane social practices. Leder draws on literary examples, clinical and philosophical sources, his medical training, and his own struggle with chronic pain. He levies a challenge to the capitalist and Cartesian models that rule modern medicine. Similarly, he looks at the root paradigms of our penitentiary and factory farm systems and the way these produce distressed bodies, asking how such institutions can be reformed. Writing with coauthors ranging from a prominent cardiologist to long-term inmates, he explores alternative environments that can better humanize—even spiritualize—the way we treat one another, offering a very different vision of medical, criminal justice, and food systems. Ultimately Leder proposes not just new answers to important bioethical questions but new ways of questioning accepted concepts and practices.

Images of bodies and bodily practices abound in early America: from spirit possession, Fasting Days, and infanticide to running the gauntlet, going |naked as a sign,| flogging, bundling, and scalping. All have implications for the study of gender, sexuality, masculinity, illness, the |body politic,| spirituality, race, and slavery. The first book devoted solely to the history and theory of the body in early American cultural studies brings together authors representing diverse academic disciplines. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources—including itinerant ministers' journals, Revolutionary tracts and broadsides, advice manuals, and household inventories—they approach the theoretical analysis of the body in exciting new ways. A Centre of Wonders covers such varied topics as dance and movement among Native Americans; invading witch bodies in architecture and household spaces; rituals of baptism, conversion, and church discipline; eighteenth-century women's journaling; and the body as a rhetorical device in the language of diplomacy.

In everyday life we are not, for the most part, actively conscious of our bodies or the bodies of others – we simply take them for granted. This new edition of a lively introduction to the sociology of the body examines what certain aspects of our bodies, such as the size, shape, smell and demeanour, reveal about the social organization of everyday life and how the body is crucial to the way we engage with the world and the people around us. The human body is endowed with varied forms of social significance which sociology has addressed by asking questions such as: To what degree do individuals have control over their own bodies? What interest does the state have in regulating the human body? How significant is the body to the development and performance of the self in everyday life? What images of the body influence people’s expectations of themselves and others? Written in a clear and comprehensible way, The Body in Society introduces students to the key conceptual frameworks that help us to understand the social significance of the human body. This second edition has been thoroughly updated to take into account recent theories and debates and also includes enhanced pedagogical features. Using familiar examples from everyday life, such as diet and exercise regimes, personal hygiene, dress, displays of emotion, and control over bodily functions, coupled with examples from popular culture, the text has strong contemporary relevance and will strike a chord with all who read it. This book will be essential reading for students taking courses on the body in sociology, anthropology, gender studies and cultural studies.

The study of the body has developed rapidly in the social sciences and humanities in recent years, and Body Matters reflects the exciting ferment of ideas and research that is taking place in this area. This collection tackles diverse themes: sex therapy, prostitution, the male body, the management of children and food, contemporary dance, body building and images of lesbianism. Underlying this diversity are some common themes related to sex and gender, control and discipline, and popular imagery. The essays examine the social construction of the body, including issues of femininity and masculinity, and the relationship between culture and the body, and the body as a commodity. Body Matters demonstrates the links with central issues of sociological theory, concluding that the study of the body is not an esoteric 'specialism' but a central strand in modern social thought.
